Something Saturday

Tag is me

Back then I was pronounced 50% weird. Now Karine wants to know if that's correct, I guess, because she tagged me with "6 weird things about me". I am pretty sure there are such things, but how the heck am I supposed to know what's really weird about me?

Weird, after all, means: (informal use) unusual and not sensible or acceptable. Maybe I should stick to the other meaning: strange, unnatural. Unnatural? Doesn't sound that much better to me.

1. I have the urge to collect things. Things in a row (magazines, books), things I think I need (dpns), things I like (yarn, books, coloring pencils, fountain pens). There is no intention of collecting when I acquire things, it just so happens.

2. I'm German and I don't drink beer. I don't think that's weird, but apparently there are a lot of people out there who seem to think so.

3. I can't watch any series in German when I have seen the original. I will annoy people with remarks like "oh, the dubbing is soo bad" or "he/she sounds just silly in German". Another favourite is: "man, their English pronounciation is really crappy!". (Of course they don't dub names, titles like "detective" or even "mister".)

4. I either finish knitting a sweater in record time or it'll take me forever - forever as in more than one, two years. (Sweaters for personal use. Work knitting is something totally different.)

5. When I was twelve I had hemiplegia in my face. Usually only stroke sufferers get that. Apparently I caught a virus. You have to have EST (electro shock therapy) to help the nerves function again. Of course they are only small localized shocks, slightly more painful than getting a very strong shock from static.

6. I like to be tagged, but I don't like to tag. Please forgive this spoilsport - or just do it anyways if you feel so inclined.

Something Saturday

I've decided to show you something on each Saturday I find useful, delightful or maybe plain silly.

A thing I find delightful and useful at the same time is what I bought at the museum shop of the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts. It doesn't only look cool but serves to store certain tools certain people cannot live without.

As if it was made for them, no?

New Blogger

The New Blogger does neither like accents nor umlauts. I'll have to fix that.

New Blogger

I did it. I switched to the new Blogger. My blog seems to look the same. Hopefully it stays that way.

Tutti Tutto

I have a couple of pictures of the shop at the Tutto yarn factory, which, considering it was full of sock yarn, was a bit disappointing because you practically can get most of the yarn for the same price all over Germany. The grab bags were cheap, but I didn't want 1 or 2 kg of various leftover (or whatever) balls. I am funny that way. I want to knit 2 socks with one ball, or, respectively, one sock with one ball. Uh uh, not for me, thank you very much. I did buy some Opal Hundertwasser, since that's what I had my eye on.

Best laid plans of mice and men or: Procrastination is so easy

As I have said before, I finished my Mom's gift knitting on New Year's Eve. Due to unforeseen obstacles it took me a mite longer to finish than expected. That might be because I had to reknit both sleeves since in my world no one has arms 27.5 inches long. Not that I say it isn't entirely my fault for not checking the schematics, I did check my gauge after all and it was spot on. So I knit as given in the instructions and ended up with sleeves for an Orang-Utan. While the colour of the garment might have been flattering for one, I wasn't prepared to donate my work to the next zoo. Sigh. Hindsight is 20/20 and checking schematics is vital for finishing on time. I do think it fits well, though.

Here's a detail:

The crocheted buttons were a request of the recipient, I would have preferred a sleeker look, i.e. bought ones. But then, I don't have to wear it, do I?

One more thing: at 12.14 a.m. today my nephew Paul was born. He's 56 cm tall and weighs 3800 grams. Apparently he has very large feet.

"Pullover fuer kalte Tage"*

*Sweaters for cold days

That's the title of the book about Ganseys I own. The author is Sabine Domnick.
(Someone asked in the comments but left no e-mail address.)

I could for certain use a warm sweater today. It's -25 degrees celsius this morning and with wind chill -32. Brrrr...

Toothpicks?

Some Muggle asked me if I was knitting with toothpicks. Well now, my toothpicks are marked "1 Brittany 2.25 mm" and come in a set of five.

I started this sock at the gate on the Frankfurt Airport on Jan 2nd, knit all you can see on the flight back to Montreal. I bet if I hadn't watched the two movies (and turned off the light to do so which kept me from knitting properly) it would have been finished.

Quick, green and snow

Quick: I have to post yet pics of my Christmas knitting. I finished on New Year's Eve.

Green: Incidentally I am knitting on a green pair of socks. So I sock along.

Snow: It appears Winter has finally arrived in Montreal.
