Got hip?

You figure something is seriously amiss when you walk to the bus-stop, your left hip is hurting like hell and you wish you could exchange it for a new one. WTF?? I am 34 years old, the hip I have should do just fine, thank you very much! So for now I am going to blame it on the cold weather and keep with Seneca: "Scorn pain. Either it goes away or you do."

Hmmm, you might be having siatic nerve pain.

What's that, please? It sure sounds not good. My hip got better after I got out of the cold, maybe it was just a fluke...

Hi, Mona...sciatica is a pain caused by pinching or inflammation of the sciatic nerve (the nerve that runs from your lower back down the back of each leg). It's usually caused by a back injury, generally a herniated disc. The treatment is pretty much taking meds for inflammation (aspirin, ibuprofen, but not Tylenol because Tylenol only treats pain and fever, not inflammation). Other treatments include physical therapy. But if it goes away and doesn't come back, don't worry about it. It might resolve on its own. But if it feels like you can't stand on a leg without pain in the butt (yup, a real pain in the butt ;-)) then go to the doctor and get it checked out. I know, easier said than done around here...I hope you're feeling better soon.
